With Brazil having just won its first Best International Feature Film Oscar after a 27 year absence from nominations, we're excited to present BRAZILIAN SUMMER NIGHTS: a mini-season shown alongside Cine Brazil bringing the Brazilian summer to the big screen here at The Lexi.
You'll have a chance to see Héctor Babenco's 2003 prison drama CARANDIRU, Walter Salles Academy Award nominated 1998 road-drama CENTRAL STATION (extra screening added due to popular demand), Kleber Mendonça Filho's acclaimed 2012 debut NEIGHBOURING SOUNDS and Anna Muylaert's 2015 Sundance Award winner THE SECOND MOTHER. All of which were in the Brazilian Film Critics Association's Top 100 Brazilian films of all time. The earlier Sunday screenings will feature an introduction from a Brazilian speaker and our Sunday showing of THE SECOND MOTHER will feature a panel discussion led by Cine Brazil.
And don't forget, for a week after your screening you can show your ticket at Parlour for a free glass of wine, frozen margarita, pint of lager or, especially for the season: a Frozen Caipirinha! Plus our friends at The Island are hosting a Brazil themed afterparty from 8pm on Thursday 21st August following the screening of CENTRAL STATION, where your ticket can get you 10% off!
On the new release front, it's Pedro Pascal's world and we're just living in it... Not one but two of our biggest releases of August are starring him: THE FANTASTIC FOUR: FIRST STEPS and MATERIALISTS. The former has proven a worthy box office adversary for SUPERMAN, with both films being met with critical acclaim and audience affection. The latter is Celine Song's much anticipated follow-up to 2023's PAST LIVES. Both love triangle films, this one sees Pedro vying with Chris Evans for the heart of professional matchmaker Dakota Johnson.
The school holidays are here and unfortunately so is the rain... but don't let that dampen the holiday spirit! Bring your little ones to The Lexi for our wide array of FAMILY FUN programming with all tickets only £8. And don't forget MAKE A SCENE, our five day summer film school for 12-16 year olds. One that should play for kids and adults alike is Lindsay Lohan and Jamie Lee Curtis reuniting in FREAKIER FRIDAY, the sequel to 2003's body swap comedy classic.
Any resident doc-heads are spoilt for choice this month. We've got a A SIP OF IRISH, a documentary celebrating Ireland's iconic contributions to the world of food and drink. Ticket holders will have the chance to sample some Muff Liquor and director Frank Mannion will be providing an extended introduction before the screening begins. On Saturday 16th we're welcoming director Victoria Mapplebeck and producer Debbie Manners for a Q&A for MOTHERBOARD. A delightful documentary tracking motherhood over a twenty year period. From the 8th August we're showing Mstyslav Chernov's 2000 METRES TO ANDRIIVKA, the follow-up to his Academy Award winning 20 DAYS IN MARIUPOL. This follows a Ukrainian platoon on a mission to liberate the titular Russian-occupied village of Andriivka.
August heralds in some fantastic releases from Europe's best filmmakers. Out now is OSLO STORIES TRILOGY: DREAMS, the Norwegian winner of the Golden Bear at this year's Berlin Film Festival. This subversive tale of love is part of a trilogy of films and we're really hoping this first one does well enough for us to justify showing the other two films so get booking! We've also got the tense Swiss-German drama LATE SHIFT coming soon starring Leonie Benesch who you may remember from THE TEACHER'S LOUNGE a few years ago. We're also excited to bring Czech filmmaker Miloš Forman's epic 1984 AMADEUS back to the big screen over the bank holiday weekend. A brand new 4K restoration, this is one of the best films ever to win the Academy Award for Best Picture.
Coming on a Tuesday? Remember you can bring a friend for free! And not forgetting £6 tickets all day for members on Mondays.
