Bringing the Brazilian summer to the big screen
Presented alongside Cine Brazil, we're bringing the Brazilian summer to the big screen here at The Lexi. The summer holidays are synonymous with freedom, but freedom can have a different meaning depending on which side of the poverty line you fall on. Who is working whilst freedom manifests in relaxation? Who has the freedom to bend the law and who breaks the law to survive? The summer holidays are synonymous with freedom, but freedom can give you just enough rope to hang yourself with…
With Brazil having just won its first Best International Feature Film Oscar after a 27 year absence from nominations, we present a mini-season on the class divide in Brazilian cinema over that period. Featuring guest speaker introductions, a panel discussion (following the screening of THE SECOND MOTHER on Sunday 31st) and a post-screening party at The Island (following the screening of CENTRAL STATION on Thursday 21st), this is not one to miss!
You'll have a chance to see Héctor Babenco's 2003 prison drama CARANDIRU, Walter Salles Academy Award nominated 1998 road-drama CENTRAL STATION, Kleber Mendonça Filho's acclaimed 2012 debut NEIGHBOURING SOUNDS and Anna Muylaert's 2015 Sundance Award winner THE SECOND MOTHER. All of which were in the Brazilian Film Critics Association's Top 100 Brazilian films of all time.
Playing Sundays and Thursdays starting on Sunday 10th August and running into September, book your tickets now! And ticketholders don't forget, within a week after your screening you can show your ticket at Parlour for a free glass of wine, frozen margarita, pint of lager or, for the course of the season: a Frozen Caipirinha!
