Screening as part of our season: Brazilian Summer Nights presented alongside CINE BRAZIL.
The screening on Sunday 31st August, as well as an introduction by Ana Levisky, will have a panel discussion after the film with Ali Rocha, Vera S Jus and Annaís Berlim.
The Second Mother tell the story of Val, the kind of live-in housekeeper who takes her work seriously. She serves her wealthy São Paulo employers day in and day out while lovingly nannying their teenage son whom she’s raised since toddlerhood. Everyone and everything in the elegant house has its place until one day, Val’s ambitious, clever daughter Jessica arrives from Val’s hometown to take the college entrance exams. Jessica’s confident, youthful presence upsets the unspoken yet strict balance of power in the household; Val must decide where her allegiances lie and what she’s willing to sacrifice.

Ana Levisky
Ana is a film conservator who has worked in national film archives in Brazil, Ireland, and the UK. With a background in audiovisual studies, a Master’s in Creative Process, and specialised training in film restoration, she cares for analog film and is drawn to reflective storytelling. Her practice evolves from the documentary format and tends to explore the space between identity, belonging, and memory.

Vera S Jus
Vera is a Social entrepreneur, speaker, and racial activist.
Vera is a jurist, single mother and the daughter of a housekeeper worker.
She holds a Master's degree in Public International Law, focusing on human rights, health, ethnic-racial relations and immigration law. She is a consultant and advocate for the rights of children, women, and vulnerable groups, and the founder of AFRO ID, an Afro-Brazilian/Indigenous Institute in the UK.
Ali Rocha
Ali Rocha is a news and documentary producer, researcher, and human rights activist. Her work focuses on state violence and social justice in Brazil, with a particular emphasis on supporting and documenting the struggles of mothers whose children were victims of police violence.

Featuring guest speaker introductions, a panel discussion (following the screening of THE SECOND MOTHER on Sunday 31st) and a post-screening party at The Island (following the screening of CENTRAL STATION on Thursday 21st), this is not one to miss!
