The film's Academy Award nominated lead Fernanda Montenegro reunited with the director (and her daughter) in this year's Best International Feature Film winner I'M STILL HERE, playing at The Lexi again from Friday 5th September.
A retired school teacher and young boy become unlikely travelling companions when the boy is suddenly orphaned and must find his estranged father. A success at the Berlin Film Festival where it won the Golden Bear award, the unassuming road movie thrust director Walter Salles into the spotlight for its naturalistic portrayal of longing and redemption. Embittered and living alone, Dora (Fernanda Montenegro), who transcribes letters for illiterate people and pockets the money without sending the notes, meets nine-year-old Josué (Vinícius de Oliveira) just before his mother is killed in an accident. After much deliberation, Dora reluctantly embarks on a journey through northern Brazil with Josué in search of his family. With striking cinematography and a rich portrayal of Brazil’s diverse landscapes, Central Station avoids sentimentality to become a moving study of connection between two strangers improbably joined together. We'll be screening the 4K restoration released by Curzon.

With Brazil having just won its first Best International Feature Film Oscar after a 27 year absence from nominations, we present a mini-season on the class divide in Brazilian cinema over that period. Featuring guest speaker introductions, a panel discussion (following the screening of THE SECOND MOTHER on Sunday 31st) and a post-screening party at The Island (following the screening of CENTRAL STATION on Thursday 21st), this is not one to miss!
You'll have a chance to see Héctor Babenco's 2003 prison drama CARANDIRU, Walter Salles Academy Award nominated 1998 road-drama CENTRAL STATION, Kleber Mendonça Filho's acclaimed 2012 debut NEIGHBOURING SOUNDS and Anna Muylaert's 2015 Sundance Award winner THE SECOND MOTHER. All of which were in the Brazilian Film Critics Association's Top 100 Brazilian films of all time.
