SEPTEMBER AT THE LEXI CINEMA

SEPTEMBER AT THE LEXI CINEMA

Monday 1 Sep 2025

Johnathan Kirk

We're so proud of the success of our BRAZILIAN SUMMER NIGHTS mini-season shown alongside Cine Brazil which has brought in hundreds of you to see the best of Brazilian cinema on the big screen here at The Lexi.

The season concludes this week with Anna Muylaert's 2015 Sundance Award winner THE SECOND MOTHER but there's still tickets to Thursday's repeat showing. Walter Salles Academy Award nominated 1998 road-drama CENTRAL STATION has been a smash hit for us and we've added extra showings of that this week so act fast! The film's Academy Award nominated lead Fernanda Montenegro reunited with the director (and her daughter) in this year's Best International Feature Film winner I'M STILL HERE. To mark the end of our season, we're giving you an extra chance to see this one in the cinema from Saturday 6th September.

And don't forget, for a week after your screening you can show your ticket at Parlour for a free glass of wine, frozen margarita, pint of lager or, especially for the season: a Frozen Caipirinha!

The most exciting releases of the month feature some of the UK's best talent. Opening on Friday is THE ROSES, Olivia Colman and Benedict Cumberbatch's hilarious adaptation of THE WAR OF THE ROSES. We've got DOWNTON ABBEY: THE GRAND FINALE opening on Friday 19th September. The third and seemingly final entry in the beloved British series. Fans of last year's SMALL THINGS LIKE THESE won't want to miss Cillian Murphy's collaboration with the same director in STEVE. He gives a powerful performance as a headteacher in a school for boys with behavioural difficulties in this adaptation of Max Porter's book SHY.

There's lots of British actors in films on the other side of the pond too. Tom Hiddleston appears in Stephen King adaptation THE LIFE OF CHUCK, playing at The Lexi now. Having won the People's Choice Award at last year's Toronto International Film Festival, this crowdpleaser will have you dancing in the aisles. Darren Aronofsky's (BLACK SWAN, THE WHALE) returns with his lighthearted crime thriller CAUGHT STEALING, starring Austin Butler, Zoe Kravitz and an aggressively British Matt Smith. And after a fair few emails from members demanding we show it, you can finally see Liam Neeson alongside Pamela Anderson in the well received reboot of the comedy classic THE NAKED GUN from Friday 12th September.

As ever we've got some exciting Q&As coming up in the next few weeks. Actress Posy Sterling will be here on Wednesday 17th September following a screening of one of 2025's best films: LOLLIPOP. An incredible portrayal of motherhood in Britain, don't miss an extra chance to see it on the big screen and hear from the film's awards-worthy star. Next month we'll be visited by Fiona Cunningham-Reid for her documentary ACKROYD & HARVEY: THE ART OF ACTIVISM, an intimate portrait of artists Heather Ackroyd and Dan Harvey. Speaking of documentaries, we're delighted to be screening THE GOLDEN SPURTLE from Friday 19th September. A celebration of the characters competing in the world porridge championships, held each year in the Scottish village of Carrbridge.

September brings quality cinema all around but four of my very favourites of 2025 are joining us in the coming weeks. Anyone lucky enough to attend our DA 5 BLOODS screenings with Clarke Peters won't want to miss Spike Lee's newest film HIGHEST 2 LOWEST starring Denzel Washington. We're extremely proud to be one of very few cinemas in the UK showing his exceptional new film from the 5th September! Also joining us from Friday will be LITTLE TROUBLE GIRLS, a heralded Slovenian coming of age drama deservedly awarded five stars by Peter Bradshaw in The Guardian. We've got a beautiful new film from the iconic Dardenne Brothers (ROSETTA, TWO DAYS ONE NIGHT) called YOUNG MOTHERS, winner of Best Screenplay at the Cannes Film Festival. I'd be remiss if I didn't mention SORRY, BABY too, playing at The Lexi now. A funny, thoughtful and subtle film exploring sexual assault and what it leaves behind for the victim.

After all but selling out our premiere screening, we've added lots of extra showings of the National Theatre Live production of INTER ALIA starring Rosamund Pike. Fans of PRIMA FACIE won't want to miss this powerful new effort from the same team. We also implore you not to throw away your shot at seeing the original Broadway production of HAMILTON on the big screen for three nights only at the end of the month!

Coming on a Tuesday? Remember you can bring a friend for free! And not forgetting £6 tickets all day for members on Mondays.
