JUNE AT THE LEXI CINEMA

JUNE AT THE LEXI CINEMA

Sunday 1 Jun 2025

Johnathan Kirk

With THE PHOENICIAN SCHEME and MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE - THE FINAL RECKONING selling out our screens at the present, we're looking back to the past as we spotlight our June line-up... We're extremely excited to announce our long-in-the-making mini season: UNDERSEEN DAVID LEAN! Best known for his epics like Lawrence of Arabia and Doctor Zhivago, we instead wanted to focus on some of his delightful lesser screened, more class conscious earlier work. We'll be screening his Golden Bear winning Charles Laughton comedy HOBSON'S CHOICE, heart-breaking Claude Rains love triangle THE PASSIONATE FRIENDS, Katherine Hepburn's Venetian getaway in SUMMERTIME and his London-set (and Wembley visiting) wartime drama THIS HAPPY BREED. Tickets are just £10 with all Sunday screenings introduced by The Lexi's Co-Director (me!) and our final screening will feature a panel discussion with local historians.

One of the nation's greatest filmmakers isn't the only British theme for the month of June here at The Lexi. Jason Isaacs and Gillian Anderson star in an adaptation of Raynor Winn's beloved memoir THE SALT PATH. The story of a married couple's 630 mile journey to acceptance and belonging, it arrives here from Friday. Danny Boyle's much anticipated sequel 28 YEARS LATER will have us jumping out of our seats at the end of the month, starring Ralph Fiennes, Aaron Taylor-Johnson and Jodie Comer. There's also THE BALLAD OF WALLIS ISLAND for fans of Tim Key and Tom Basden. Joined by Carey Mulligan in this story of an eccentric lottery winner who tries to reunite his favourite musical duo.

We're mourning the recent passing of the legendary Brazilian photographer Sebastião Salgado with some showings of Wim Wenders' 2014 documentary on the man: THE SALT OF THE EARTH. One of my favourite documentaries and a great opportunity to celebrate Sebastião on the big screen. Another favourite of mine is GOOD ONE, joining us from next Friday. Filmmaker India Donaldson’s insightful, piercing debut follows a 17-year-old as she embarks on a three-day backpacking trip in the Catskills with her dad and his oldest friend. I also wanted to shout out ALONG CAME LOVE, a personal and historical French romance that's finally releasing in the UK. We'll soon be going on sale with titles like TORNADO, JANE AUSTEN WRECKED MY LIFE and FROM HILDE WITH LOVE, sign up to our weekly newsletter to be the first to know when we do.

Albeit an early July release, I wanted to briefly mention THE LINE WE CROSSED. A British story of dissent drawn from the frontlines of climate resistance, it will be followed by a Q&A with the director and participants in the film. We're also doing a one-off showing of NT LIVE: A STREETCAR NAMED DESIRE as the 2014 production of Tennessee Williams’ timeless masterpiece returns to cinemas, starring Gillian Anderson, Vanessa Kirby, and Ben Foster.

Coming on a Tuesday? Remember you can bring a friend for free! And not forgetting £6 tickets all day for members on Mondays.
