Busy times are ahead as BRAZILIAN SUMMER NIGHTS returns to The Lexi! Our programme spotlighting the best of Brazilian cinema is back and begins on Sunday with the acclaimed comedy A DOG'S WILL (2000). Over the next weeks we'll also be screening CITY OF GOD (2002), Ó PAÍ, Ó (2007), BASIC SANITATION, THE MOVIE (2007), and BACURAU (2019). We're super thankful to our partner on this season Cine Brazil as well as Film London for the funding, Zucca's Deli for the salgados and Delicias for the cans of Guaraná! Tickets are just £10 (£8 for members) and each Sunday screening features an introduction from a Brazilian cinema expert.
From the Portuguese language to Spanish language, our biggest film of August is likely to be Pedro Almodóvar's latest auto-fiction BITTER CHRISTMAS. A personal and clever work from the master of melodrama, for my money it is his best film this decade! Then there's Glenn Close's mournful and intimate Finland-set drama THE SUMMER BOOK. Our screening on Sunday 9th August will feature a Q&A with the Director Charlie McDowell. For something larger scale we've got a couple of deserving blockbusters at the end of the month. Anne Hathaway and Ewan McGregor's dinosaur survival drama THE END OF OAK STREET is rip-roaring fun and a real throwback to the glory days of adventure cinema. We've also got Spider-Man swinging into our screens with the acclaimed latest instalment: BRAND NEW DAY.
Our LEXI SELECTS strand concludes this month with four fantastic films. We begin on Friday with Mexican documentary A CHILD OF MY OWN, an extension of our Maite Alberdi SPOTLIGHT season. Next Tuesday we welcome Academy Award winner Jessie Buckley to The Lexi to introduce the UK Theatrical Premiere of I'M THINKING OF ENDING THINGS (2020) as well as the London Premiere of her short film How To Shoot A Ghost (2025). On Monday 17th August we welcome Emily Simmons from the Crip Cinema Archive to introduce the beloved documentary CRIP CAMP: A DISABILITY REVOLUTION (2020). And we finish the project with Iranian coup documentary COUP 53 (2019) starring Ralph Fiennes as Norman Darbyshire. The screening on Monday 24th August will have a Q&A with Director Taghi Amirani.
If you've been waiting on a road trip film about three elderly nuns played by Judy Davis, Miriam Margolyes and Jacki Weaver then its your lucky day, HOLY DAYS opens here from Friday 14th August. Plus Bill Nighy reunites with his estranged children in the tender drama & SONS starring Imelda Staunton, Dominic West and Lexi veteran George MacKay. That opens Friday 21st August alongside TONY, a feel-good hangout movie starring Antonio Banderas, Leo Woodall and a brilliant Dominic Sessa as a young chef by the name of Anthony Bourdain...
There's a trio of music based one-offs here in August starting on Wednesday with DAVID BYRNE'S AMERICAN UTOPIA featuring a special recorded introduction by David Byrne himself. There's a rare opportunity to see ANDRÉ RIEU'S 2026 SUMMER CONCERT: VIVA MAASTRICHT! on Saturday 8th August. And to mark the 60th Anniversary of Notting Hill Carnival we'll be screening MAS RESISTANCE & THE PAN MAN as part of our Black History Studies strand with post-film Q&A on Wednesday 26th August.
And for some less musical special events why not try the next film in our Maite Alberdi SPOTLIGHT season: the unbelievable Academy Award nominated documentary THE MOLE AGENT. The screening on Sunday 30th August will feature an introduction alongside Cinema Mentire. Not officially on sale until Monday, we can announce that this month's Lexi Seniors' Film Club screening will be BHAJI ON THE BEACH on Monday 24th August. Tickets are just £2 and there's free tea and biscuits as well as a post-film discussion. Our last screening of THE PEOPLE'S EMERGENCY BRIEFING sold out in July so we're giving you a second chance. Hosted by the Brent Green Party, the screening on Wednesday 19th August will be followed by a live panel discussion.
