Black History Studies: Notting Hill Carnival 60th Anniversary Short Films + Q&A with Directors

Charmaine Simpson, founder and CEO of Black History Studies, will introduce two short films and lead a discussion following this screening with the directors.

Russell Henderson "The Pan Man"', dir. Mike McKenzie (film director at MAD4Films), 24 mins.

Synopsis: Winner of the Best Audience Film at the Portobello Film Festival, "The Pan Man" documentary is a must-see. Watch Russ Henderson's journey of perseverance, spreading steel pan music in the UK, Notting Hill Carnival, from poverty to receiving an MBE.

Mas Resistance, dir. Symone Wiliams, 28 mins.

Mas Resistance is a visuals arts project incorporating spoken word, video, music and performance to capture archive and promote the dying art of Mas - storytelling through costume - in Notting Hill Carnival. It includes contemporary works such as Symone Williams' Midnight Jumbie and the final masterpiece of Vernon "Fellows" Williams, founding member of Notting Hill Carnival. The film is a portrait of the Williams family as they strive to keep traditional mas culture and characters alive.
