This screening creates a rare space where statistics are transformed into stories, and policy becomes intimate. In bringing these films together, we confront the corrosive effects that rising anti-migrant sentiment and right-wing extremism have on us all. These are no longer distant political abstractions, but forces that reverberate through entire communities. We witness how limbo is created as fear reshapes relationships, and imaginations. Lived experience echoes a person’s story, from where they are from to the way they are treated when they arrive in the UK.
Together, the films press us with urgent questions: How have our prevailing narratives narrowed the possibility of welcoming the stranger? Who is rendered visible, and who is pushed to the margins? And, crucially, how can we re-imagine together a more inclusive society?
Integration is not framed here as a burden borne by those who arrive. Rather, it emerges as a shared civic practice—an ongoing, collective act requiring openness, creativity, and the courage to remain in conversation with one another.
Our panel discussion touches upon this, presenting Pixida Films’ campaigner Kassa Deressa.
This screening is presented by Pixida Films in collaboration with HIAS+JCORE and Brent Council to mark the initiative of Refugee Shabbat, a weekend celebrating interfaith support for the welcoming and integration of people that experience the asylum system in the UK.
