It’s Tona’s 27th birthday and the extended family gather in the family’s rambling home to celebrate. Miscommunication, chaos, evasion and fear all come into play as Sol, Tona’s young daughter, tries to make sense of the adults’ evasive language and erratic behaviour. The viewer can see immediately that Tona is dying, being cared for in loving seclusion by his older sisters in an upstairs room. Through overheard conversations we understand that money for his treatment has run out. The second film from Lila Avilés (The Chamermaid) is a profoundly humane ensemble piece showing a childs point of view with nuance, warmth and humour.
