A special one-off screening for International Women's Day.
Kristen Stewart’s adaptation of Lidia Yuknavitch’s memoir is raw, devastating cinematic poetry, supercharged by Imogen Poots’ tremendous, committed performance. Lidia grows up in a dysfunctional home, with a sexually abusive father. She has passion for swimming – an activity that brings her freedom and control. Her talent for the sport promises her an escape through a college scholarship. However, when she leaves home, she remains haunted by her past. Stewart skilfully channels the visceral spirit of Yuknavitch’s book, creatively experimenting with form and sound to explore how Lidia internalises violence. Her trauma and self-discovery is traced through fragmented memories and stream-of-consciousness vignettes, caught on grainy 16mm film with layered sounds and intimate narration. Like a bracing swim, The Chronology of Water is challenging and intense, but it will leave you feeling invigorated and glad you took the dip.
