Urška Djukić delivers a beautiful, sensitive portrait of a shy teenager growing up and her first experiences of adulthood. Lucia, an introverted 16-year-old, joins a choir at her Catholic school and befriends outgoing Ana-Maria. But the choir’s weekend trip to a countryside convent, where she meets a renovation workman, tests both that friendship and Lucia’s beliefs. This assured directorial feature debut from award-winning Slovenian director Djukić is reminiscent of Céline Sciamma’s early work, combining an intimate focus on female sexual awakening and a tender look at the complexities of teenage friendship, here set within a religious community. Winner of the FIPRESCI award for best film at this year’s Berlinale, Little Trouble Girls delivers a sensitive female coming-of-age story with universal relevance and marks the emergence of an exciting new voice in European cinema.
