One of the most secretive films in recent memory, Steven Spielberg's sci-fi epic DISCLOSURE DAY lands at the Lexi from Wednesday 10th June. Starring Emily Blunt, Josh O'Connor and Colin Firth, early reactions have been glowing with some calling it Spielberg's best film this century! We can't wait for you all to see this one and fingers crossed for another classic from the great Steven Spielberg.
Though that's expected to rule the box office in June, a couple of horror films have been surprise sensations in May. There's a cautionary tale as old as time in OBSESSION when a hopeless romantic finds himself getting exactly what he wished for but discovers that some desires come at a sinister price. Breaking records across this world, this astonishing debut opens here from Friday. Then there's BACKROOMS opening here on Friday 19th June starring Chiwetel Ejiofor and Renate Reinsve. It follows a furniture store owner and his therapist discovering a dimension of seemingly endless liminal spaces accessed through the basement of his store. With both of these directors in their 20s, could we be set for a new golden age of horror? Come along and decide for yourselves!
Looking for something a little lighter? How about a playful French mystery starring Jodie Foster. A PRIVATE LIFE follows a renowned psychiatrist who learns of the death of one of her patients, she is convinced it was murder and decides to investigate. We've been looking forward to sharing this one with you since we saw it last year and can't wait to hear your thoughts from Friday 26th June. Next Friday we've got the surprise film at last year's London Film Festival: TUNER. A pianist heist film with an emotional twist, it features tender performance from Leo Woodall and Dustin Hoffman. And then there's of course STAR WARS: THE MANDALORIAN AND GROGU playing from Friday 19th June. You don't need to have seen the TV show to fall in love with the iconic Baby Yoda in this cinematic and distinctively Star Wars adventure! Members have priority booking on this until Wednesday at 11am.
Our LEXI SELECTS strand continues this month with QUO VADIS, AIDA? from next Friday. This forgotten 2020 Bosnian masterpiece about wartime complicity was nominated for Best Director at the BAFTAs but has barely been screened in the years since. Don't miss my introduction on Tuesday 9th June. We've got two Selects choices for Refugee Week, first there's DREAMERS in which Nigerian migrant Isio (Ronkẹ Adékọluẹ́jọ́) finds love whilst detained in the Hatchworth Removal Centre. There's also Yugoslavia refugee story SURVIVING EARTH + Director Q&A on Thursday 18th June. Tickets are just £3 and come with a free box of popcorn. This offer also extends to our Ukrainian Solidarity screening of U ARE THE UNIVERSE on Tuesday 30th June, both these screenings are supported by Brent Council.
As always you can expect the best of British cinema here all month. Fashion and Art lovers won't want to miss MOSS & FREUD. It follows supermodel Kate Moss (Ellie Bamber) embarking on a journey of self-discovery when acclaimed artist Lucian Freud (Derek Jacobi) offers to paint her portrait. Claire Foy and Richard E Grant team up for the hilarious 18th century social satire SAVAGE HOUSE opening here from Friday 19th June. Next Friday there's NORTHERN SOUL: STILL BURNING, charting how this musical movement has weaved and transformed itself musically and culturally through the decades. For documentary fans there's also TIME AND WATER, the follow-up to the director's beloved 2022 film Fire of Love.
With THE PLAYBOY OF THE WESTERN WORLD on our screens this week, we've just announced our next National Theatre screening: LES LIAISONS DANGEREUSES. Playing from Wednesday 1st July, this acclaimed adaptation features wonderful performances from the always brilliant Lesley Manville (Phantom Thread), Aidan Turner (Rivals) and Monica Barbaro (A Complete Unknown). We're concluding phase two of our female filmmaker season SPOTLIGHT with SEVEN BEAUTIES, the film for which Lina Wertmüller became the first woman nominated for an Academy Award for Best Director. There's a special one night only chance to see the anime classic AKIRA back on the big screen with an introduction as part of our Animation Reframed strand. And last but not least we're excited to welcome Green Ray to our cinema for the UK premiere of MOTHERTONGUE on Saturday 6th June.
