It wouldn't be Valentine's Day (or Galentine's for that matter) at The Lexi without a romantic offering and this year is no exception. On Friday 13th February we'll be opening Emerald Fennell's hotly anticipated WUTHERING HEIGHTS adaptation. Starring Margot Robbie and Jacob Elordi as Emily Brontë's iconic Cathy and Heathcliff, tickets for this one are already going fast so you'll want to secure your seat as soon as possible.
With many of the BAFTA contenders only now reaching our screens, February is a great time for British Cinema at The Lexi. Claire Foy and Brendan Gleeson's grief drama H IS FOR HAWK was just nominated for Best British Film and is playing at The Lexi now. Nominated for Outstanding Debut is the astonishing Nigerian-British co-production MY FATHER'S SHADOW which we adored and can't wait to screen. Horror doesn't get more British than 28 YEARS LATER: THE BONE TEMPLE and we're bringing that one to some late night slots next week. And though not a strictly British film, the UK's actors of the moment Josh O'Connor and Paul Mescal team up in folk music drama THE HISTORY OF SOUND opening here on Friday 20th February.
Three Cannes sensations are joining us in February starting with Richard Linklater's biopic about the making of Jean-Luc Godard's BREATHLESS, the acclaimed NOUVELLE VAGUE. We're also playing Iraqi coming of age drama THE PRESIDENT'S CAKE which sees a child's eye view perspective of growing up under Saddam Hussein’s oppressive regime. And fresh from a Best Actor and Best Picture nomination (its our programmers' personal favourite contender!), we'll be opening the Brazilian drama THE SECRET AGENT on Friday 27th February. Alongside CINE BRAZIL who we worked with on last year's BRAZILIAN SUMMER NIGHTS season (which featured the director's debut film NEIGHBOURING SOUNDS), we're hosting a PREVIEW of the film on Wednesday 18th February!
Secret Agent isn't the only major awards contender on the horizon at The Lexi, we're finally showing the beloved American fable TRAIN DREAMS starring Joel Edgerton and Felicity Jones. The film picked up nominations for Best Picture and Best Adapted Screenplay and is playing at The Lexi now. Also on at the moment is Mick McCarthy and Roy Keane at war in SAIPAN. Starring Steve Coogan, it chronicles the fallout of the Irish football team's infamous 2002 World Cup campaign. Perhaps the biggest snub at this year's Oscars was the zero nominations for Park Chan-wook's acclaimed Korean thriller NO OTHER CHOICE, you'll have to decide for yourselves when it releases here from Friday.
After sold out screenings of her debut film SALT OF THIS SEA we're excited to continue our SPOTLIGHT: ANNEMARIE JACIR season with Palestinian drama WHEN I SAW YOU on 8th and 12th February. Sunday's screening will feature an introduction from critic, author and broadcaster Hanna Ines Flint. We'll be previewing the acclaimed BAFTA nominated French animation LITTLE AMÉLIE on Wednesday 11th February at 8:30pm as part of our animation strand aimed at adults ANIMATION REFRAMED. We're excited to welcome Black History Studies back to The Lexi with a double bill of AFENI SHAKUR AND THE TRIAL OF THE BLACK PANTHER 21 + LIBERTY on Thursday 26th February. And last but not least, as the first Sundance Film Festival in his absence comes to a close, we're commemorating the recent passing of Robert Redford with a special screening of OUT OF AFRICA (1985). Sydney Pollack's Best Picture winning romantic drama stars Robert and Meryl Streep and we're excited to give our audiences the chance to see this epic back on the big screen on Monday 23rd February!
Coming on a Tuesday? Remember you can bring a friend for free! And not forgetting £6 tickets all day for members on Mondays.
