The Sun is starting to shine and Easter holidays are upon us. Whether you're spending the Easter break with family or at home, if you're on the hunt for quality cinema, you'll find it here at The Lexi. From Richard Burton to Ulysse, Snow White to Minecraft Creepers, you're truly spoilt for choice in April.
Our big releases for April are likely to be our family friendly films, though they are likely to appeal to all ages! We expect this year's winner of the Best Animated Film Oscar FLOW to be a real crossover success, this wordless wonder will break hearts across generations and we're very excited to finally bring it to the big screen. We're also on sale with the live action reimagining of DISNEY'S SNOW WHITE, fantasy adventure video game adaptation A MINECRAFT MOVIE, and part dog, part man, all hero: DOG MAN, likely one for younger audiences.
Richard Burton lovers are in for a real treat this month with MR BURTON, a biopic about the great actor's early upbringing starring Toby Jones and Leslie Manville. To celebrate the release we're delighted to be screening one of the Port Talbot legend's most enduring performances, with WHO'S AFRAID OF VIRGINIA WOOLF back on the big screen! Starring alongside his then wife Elizabeth Taylor, this rarely screened Mike Nichols classic garnered thirteen Oscar nominations in 1966. A short boat ride across the Irish sea takes us from a Welsh genius to an Irish one, as we see the staggering story of one of Ireland's great authors in BLUE ROAD: THE EDNA O'BRIEN STORY. And don't forget about the smash hit Irish comedy FOUR MOTHERS which won the BFI London Film Festival Audience Award.
A few others I want to flag are Ralph Fiennes and Juliette Binoche's Odyssey adaptation THE RETURN, their first collaboration since 1996's Best Picture winner THE ENGLISH PATIENT. Alain Guiraudie's French thriller MISERICORDIA is a delightful experience and a well deserved winner of Cahiers du Cinéma film of the year poll. Margy Kinmonth’s documentary WAR PAINT: WOMEN AT WAR shines a light on the trailblazing role of women war artists on the front lines around the world. It's the follow-up to her beloved 2022 release ERIC RAVILIOUS: DRAWN TO WAR. Standby for us going onsale with Steve Coogan befriending a penguin in THE PENGUIN LESSONS, joining his stellar turn in NT LIVE: DR. STRANGELOVE in our April lineup
After some fantastic sold out Q&As in March with SIX INCHES OF SOIL and THE END, we're keeping that momentum going in April with three thrilling screenings to announce. On Monday 7th April we'll be welcoming Rōgan Graham to introduce the seminal 1992 film JUST ANOTHER GIRL ON THE I.R.T. as the final part of TAPE Collective's SNAPSHOT season. On Thursday 24th April we'll be hosting a fundraiser for Ukraine with a screening of SOLDIERS OF SONG + Q&A with the director Ryan Smith and a performance by one of the stars of the film, Ukrainian opera singer Sergiy Ivanchuk. We're also welcoming back filmmaker Jillian Edelstein for another Q&A for her film THE WATER RATS on Tuesday 29th April.
Coming on a Tuesday? Remember you can bring a friend for free! And not forgetting £6 tickets all day for members on Mondays.
