This month's programme is positively packed with films for every kind of taste. From thrills to laughs, let's take a look at just a few of the films you can watch this April at The Lexi...
WICKED LITTLE LETTERS arrives Friday 5 April
A stranger than fiction true story inspired Wicked Little Letters, a sweary comedy which sees the genteel town of Littlehampton thrown into disarray, as residents are plagued by obscenity-filled letters arriving through their letter boxes. With unsurprisingly brilliant performances from Olivia Colman (rude letter victim) and Jessie Buckley (rude letter prime suspect), it’s a humorous tale that also touches on some of the pressing social issues of the time, all through a delightfully profanity-embellished lens. THE TROUBLE WITH JESSICA screens from Friday 5 April
Comedy doesn’t get much darker (and funnier) than this: The Trouble with Jessica is a devilishly comic escapade into a single night gone horribly, hilariously wrong. Tom and Sarah (played by Alan Tudyk and Shirley Henderson) are a successful couple, but having fallen upon hard times financially, they’ve had to put their house on the market. With things looking up and a buyer secured, it looks like they can finally relax. Until the awkward dinner party to end all awkward dinner parties, that is, as a certain uninvited guest causes a slight hitch to their plans… View showtimes.
CIVIL WAR arrives Friday 12 April
Alex Garland (Ex Machina) directs this disconcerting, electrifying ride through a war-torn near-future America, as a group of military-embedded journalists race to Washington, DC. It’s a race against time: they’re hoping to get there before rebel factions descend upon the White House. As much a philosophical inquiry into journalistic ethics and chasing the story whatever the cost, as it is an ominous and high octane snapshot of an America ravaged by violent division. Plus, it boasts a stellar cast including Kirsten Dunst, Cailee Spaeny (Priscilla), and Wagner Moura (Narcos). View showtimes.
DISCO BOY plays from Friday 5 April
A mind-bending feature debut from Giacomo Abbruzzese, Disco Boy follows undocumented immigrant Aleksei (Passages' Franz Rokowski) as he joins the French Foreign Legion out of desperation to secure papers. But when he’s sent to the Niger Delta on a rescue mission, his goal for personal security becomes second to newfound obsessions, after he encounters guerrilla fighter Jomo and his sister Udoka. He’s plagued by slow-burning psychological troubles, who returns to France gripped by hallucinatory obsessions. Set to a pulsing score from French DJ Vitalic, Disco Boy is a propulsive, dreamy story of intertwined fates. View showtimes.
BACK TO BLACK lands at The Lexi on Friday 19 April
Amy Winehouse was a true homegrown icon. Back to Black tells her story with both warmth and unflinching honesty, covering both her artistry, her songwriting, as well as the demons she grappled with as she rose to global fame. Set against the vivid, vibrant Camden streets she called home, director Sam Taylor-Johnson (Nowhere Boy) takes us into Winehouse’s life as her tumultuous relationship with Blake Fielder-Civil inspires her to write and record her groundbreaking album “Back to Black”.
