JULY AT THE LEXI CINEMA

Wednesday 5 Jul 2023

Gen Sandle

July has arrived, and you all know what that means. Oppenbarbie. Barbenheimer. Call this moment in cinema history what you will, but July sees the release of two of this year’s most hotly anticipated titles: Barbie and Oppenheimer. We can’t wait. Watch them in whatever order you prefer - but they absolutely both need to be seen on the big screen.

We’ve got a host of other brilliant titles lined up, too - including Indiana Jones’ swan song in The Dial of Destiny, and a biopic of the iconic Tina Turner screening as part of our Black History Studies strand.

Here are July’s highlights:

OPPENHEIMER plays from Friday 21 July

During World War II, American scientist J. Robert Oppenheimer became a key player in the development of the atomic bomb. For better or worse, his work altered the course of human history. A complex figure who would be forever haunted by his own creation, it’s little wonder that his story - both tragic and epic in its far-reaching consequences - drew the attention of director Christopher Nolan, the mind behind Interstellar, Tenet, and Inception. Starring Cilian Murphy as the enigmatic Oppenheimer himself, Oppenheimer is a spectacular and thought-provoking thriller, inspired by the Pulitzer Prize-winning American Prometheus: The Triumph and Tragedy of J. Robert Oppenheimer, written by Kai Bird and Martin J. Sherwin. Watch the trailer here.

BARBIE plays from Friday 28 July

In Barbie Land, everything is perfect. But when one particular Barbie falls short of the expected standards following what can only be described as a catastrophic existential crisis,  she’s exiled from the world of dolls into the deeply flawed world of humans. Poor Barbie! But her expulsion from pink-hued paradise evolves into an unexpected journey of self-discovery, as she finds herself learning that her imperfections are what make her unique. Featuring a stellar cast playing an array of Barbies and Kens, Barbie is a technicolour joyride from the brilliant mind of Greta Gerwig.

MISSION IMPOSSIBLE: DEAD RECKONING opens at The Lexi on Friday 14 July.

Reprising his role as Ethan Hunt (a field agent who just can’t seem to stop accepting impossible missions) Tom Cruise is as suave as ever in Mission Impossible: Dead Reckoning - Part One, and he’s still performing his own stunts. Hunt and his IMF team have been given their most high-stakes assignment yet: they must stop a mysterious, all-powerful enemy must be stopped from using a terrifying weapon which could eliminate humanity. A  high-octane pursuit across the globe follows. Watch the trailer here.

Lexi members are invited to a preview of Mission Impossible: Dead-Reckoning Part One on Thursday 13 July! Sponsored by our friends at Camerons Stiff & Co.

INDIANA JONES AND THE DIAL OF DESTINY plays at The Lexi from Friday 7 July.

Harrison Ford returns as the eponymous rugged adventurer-archaeologist in Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny. Set during the height of the Space Race, Indie dons his fedora and embarks on a new adventure with his goddaughter (Fleabag’s Phoebe Waller-Bridge), as they race against time to procure a legendary dial, before it falls into the wrong hands - potentially altering the course of history forever. Watch the trailer here.

TINA screens at The Lexi on Sunday 16 July.

Tina Turner overcame immense adversity to become a Grammy-Award Winning musician - from bigotry to the abuse she suffered in her marriage, Turner’s story is one of undeniable tenacity and reinvention. A true trailblazer, Turner broke boundaries with her success. From her childhood in Tennessee to her remarkable career, Tina recounts the story of a remarkable superstar. Watch the trailer here.

Definitely an exciting month of film ahead. And remember - as part of our Lexi Mondays deal, you can catch these titles for just £8 every Monday (that's £6 if you're a member!).
