Four Black veterans return to Vietnam decades after the war to find their squad leader's remains — and a stash of buried gold. Spike Lee's film was released straight to Netflix during lockdown and (to our knowledge) never played to a cinema audience in the UK... until now. Voted the Best Film of 2020 by the National Board of Review, we're delighted to celebrate the (da) 5th anniversary of the film, with the (da) 5 screenings here at The Lexi.
And that's not all, the screening at 16:40 on Saturday 02 August will be followed by an in-person Q&A with actor Clarke Peters. Clarke received a BAFTA nomination for his performance as Otis in the film and we're honoured to welcome him to our cinema.
We're extremely excited to announce our long-in-the-making mini season: UNDERSEEN DAVID LEAN! Best known for his epics like Lawrence of Arabia and Doctor Zhivago, we instead wanted to focus on some of his delightful lesser screened, more class conscious earlier work. We'll be screening his Golden Bear winning Charles Laughton comedy HOBSON'S CHOICE, heart-breaking Claude Rains love triangle THE PASSIONATE FRIENDS, Katherine Hepburn's Venetian getaway in SUMMERTIME and his London-set (and Wembley visiting) wartime drama THIS HAPPY BREED. Tickets are just £10 with all Sunday screenings introduced by The Lexi's Co-Director (me!) and our final screening will feature a panel discussion with local historians.
