BUDDY MOVIES TO WATCH THIS AUTUMN

Everyone cares about their friends. But you know what good friends do? They invite their friends to the cinema.

And you know what a really really good friend does? They get their friends free cinema tickets.

We love friendship at The Lexi, that’s why we’re helping friends old and new to connect (and ensuring your huge popularity) through our Buddy Movie Tuesdays deal. With a Lexi Membership, you can bring a friend to see a film at The Lexi for free every single Tuesday, with the purchase of a full price ticket.

So, we’ve rounded up a list of some of the best buddy movies (and friendship-adjacent films) you can watch together, when you’re not busy watching something on the big screen…

1.Thelma and Louise

Two women embark on a roadtrip which turns into a desperate chase from the law in iconic road movie Thelma and Louise. Directed by Ridley Scott and starring Geena Davis, Susan Sarandon, it also features Brad Pitt in his breakout role.

2. Frances Ha

Co-written by Greta Gerwig and Noah Baumbach (making it a must-watch in the wake of Barbie’s box office dominion) 2012 feature Frances Ha is a tribute to friendship between women, as a 27-year old dancer finds her best friend slipping away when the demands of adult life starts to take hold.

3. Butch Cassidy And The Sundance Kid

Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid is another running-from-the-law title (the things we do for our friends!), two outlaws in the wild west must evade capture after a train robbery gone wrong. Their genius solution? Run away to Bolivia, obviously. The buddies in question are played by Robert Redford and Paul Newman.

4.Ghost World

Based on Daniel Clowes’ 90s graphic novel of the same name, Ghost World gained a cult following after its initial release in 2001. Two high school friends (Scarlett Johansson and Thora Birch) hatch a plan to respond to a lonely hearts ad as a joke. The unexpected aftermath of their slightly mean-spirited scheme alters their friendship forever, as they become bizarrely embroiled with the man (Steve Buscemi) who published the advert.

5.Pulp Fiction

Quentin Tarantino’s cult hit Pulp Fiction is a buddy movie of sorts, as two hitmen (played by no less than John Travolta and Samuel L. Jackson) tasked with retrieving a suitcase find their mission rapidly descending into all-out chaos. We’ve also got John Travolta’s role as Vincent Vega in the film to thank for a meme with enduring appeal.

6.Booksmart

In Olivia Wilde’s Booksmart, two best friends and academic overachievers decide they’ve spent an excessive amount of their high school careers studying,  and agree to make up for lost time before their graduation. The catch with this scheme is that they’re due to graduate the following day, and as it turns out, cramming several years of carefree teenage fun into one night is extremely difficult.

7.Banshees of Inisherin

A Lexi audience favourite, The Banshees of Inisherin isn’t exactly a heart-warmer, but it’s a darkly funny story of a friendship turned sour for no discernible reason other than Irishman Colm ‘just doesn’t like’ his ex-best friend Padraic anymore. Pleading looks from Colin Farrell and several pub showdowns ensue. Watch it with a friend, if only as a reminder that this is what could happen if you ever fall out.

8.Stand By Me

"I never had any friends later on like the ones I had when I was twelve"... Critically acclaimed when it was first released in 1986, Stand By Me is a nostalgic, heartfelt story of childhood friendship, as a group of twelve-year-olds embark on a hike to find the body of a missing boy. Something you may not know about this 80s favourite: it’s based on a short story by Stephen King.

So gather your besties: it’s time for a film night. And next time it’s a Tuesday, you can use your Lexi Membership to  bring them to The Lexi for free. And if you’re not a member yet, consider this your excuse to become a member today. Trust us, your friends will thank you.

The Lexi Membership is sponsored by our friends at local estate agency Camerons Stiff & Co.
