The 8th

(12A)

A story of grassroots activism engineering change.

Directed by Aideen Kane, Lucy Kennedy, and Maeve O’Boyle, this documentary traces Ireland’s campaign to remove the 8th Amendment – a constitutional ban on abortion. Though there are voices from both sides of debate, The 8th centres on the dynamic female leaders of the pro-choice campaign. It follows Ailbhe Smyth, a veteran campaigner, and “glitter-activist” Andrea Horan as they attempt to reshape the conservative, Catholic influenced Ireland into a more liberal and secular society.

An urgent narrative, a cautionary tale and a roadmap for progressive reforms in a modern era where authoritarianism is on the rise, The 8th shows a country forging a new progressive path when reproductive rights are threatened all over the world.

”The film sustains a suspenseful narrative line in its countdown to voting day… The story offers a potent message at a time when thirst for local and global change is mobilising new generations to a seismic degree.” – Screen Daily
