Judas And The Black Messiah

Judas And The Black Messiah

(15)

Winner of 2 Academy Awards – Best Supporting Actor and Best Original Song

In February 1968, J. Edgar Hoover issued a directive to “prevent the rise of a ‘messiah’ who could unify and electrify the militant black nationalist movement”. Under his direction, the FBI had been waging war on the rising civil rights movement through a “counterintelligence endeavour is to expose, disrupt, misdirect, discredit or otherwise neutralise the activities of black-nationalist, hate-type organisations and groupings, their leadership, spokesmen, membership and supporters”.

Directed by Shaka King, Judas and the Black Messiah tells the story of William O’Neal (Lakeith Stanfield), a petty car thief who is forced to become an FBI informant and infiltrate the Black Panther Party. The objective is to keep tabs on the charismatic leader, Chairman Fred Hampton (Daniel Kaluuya,) as the FBI grows fearful of the Black Panther’s growing support. Though O’Neal revels in his double life, he begins to doubt his acts against the Black Panthers and soon is caught in a war for his soul.

A thrilling, important and timely drama that should be on everyone’s ‘must watch’ list.

**** A truly gripping Black Panther drama” – Mark Kermode, The Observer
