The Work

"A compelling emotional display, one that captures masculinity at its most innocent and leads to profound displays of compassion." rogerebert.com

Showing Times

Set inside a single room in high security Folsom Prison, this doc follows three men from outside as they join in a four-day group therapy retreat with level-four convicts. Over the course, each man in the room takes a turn at delving deep into his past.  The raw and revealing process that the prisoners undertake exceeds the expectations of the free men, ripping them out of their comfort zones and forcing them to see themselves and the prisoners in unexpected ways.

This riveting film won the Grand Jury Prize for Best Documentary at SXSW earlier this year, and the audience award for Best Documentary at Sheffield DocFest.  Offering audiences a rare look past the clichés of prison life and its dehumanising tropes in our culture, The Work reveals the potential for catharsis, change and meaningful rehabilitation for prisoners (and other people) otherwise trapped by the traumas in their past.
