Hard-working and resourceful Ricky (Kris Hitchen) and Abby (Debbie Honeywood) struggle to stay on the ladder, parent two teenagers and still have enough time over for an occasional laugh and a cuddle. When Ricky takes a new delivery job, being 'self-employed' seems to offer an edge.  The change leaves the couple very thinly stretched, as Abby juggles her health assistant job with trying to support their truant son and Ricky struggles with long days and high targets. It's a recipe for disaster, and Ricky finds there is no compassion or protection in this world when he needs it.

Ken Loach pretty much picks up where his devastating social critique I, Daniel Blake left off.  This feels like a companion piece, but this time the focus is the high human cost of the gig economy, with its zero hours, zero benefits, and zero compassion. The film is a searing indictment, lit through with all the heartfelt anger that Loach and his team brought to Daniel Blake.
