ROCKS + live intro

“Utterly unmissable” ★★★★★ Guardian; “A film of great empathy and love” Little White Lies; “Raw, raucous & utterly unmissable” Time Out

Showing Times

The film follows teenager Rocks (Bukky Bakray) as she struggles to care for her little brother Emmanuel (D’angelou Osei Kissiedu) after their mother takes 'time out' from their lives.  Overnight Rocks's life of youthful freedom becomes one of challenge as she struggles to hide from the authorities that her mother is gone.  With the help of her loyal crew of girl friends, she navigates this abrupt passage into adulthood with grit and determination - and not a little joy!

Uniquely crafted by a majority all-female creative team in collaboration with mostly first-time actors Rocks was written by Theresa Ikoko and Claire Wilson, and directed by Sarah Gavron (Suffragette, Brick Lane) and associate director Anu Henriques.  The core group of British girls who take the leads come from differing cultural backgrounds including Nigerian, Somali, Polish, Bangladeshi, English and Congolese-Ghanaian. This group emerged out of extensive workshops in which they generously shared experiences of friendship, their cultures, social media and school life as part of the filmmaking process.

We are delighted that associate director Anu Henriques will be introducing the film on Fri 2 Oct [now sold out] and also on Tue 6 Oct, speaking about its unique journey to screen.  Anu has worked with closely with Sarah Gavron on the film, playing a key creative role through the development, shoot and post-production.
