By night, Andy Kirkpatrick is a stand-up comedian; during the day he may be found dangling from a vertical rockface.  This "beautiful, complicated" doc is a raw and emotive portrait of the complex life of this writer, funny-man and unlikely hero-mountaineer.  The film charts Kirkpatrick's 18-day solo ascent of vertiginous El Capitan in Yosemite National Park, an experience which is precarious, tough and lonely.  It's a raw and intimate profile of one of climbing’s most controversial, unpredictable and adored figures, and an unlikely but powerful vehicle for his exploration of identity, fatherhood, and how our pasts shape us.

Psycho Vertical has been a hit on the climbing and extreme sports circuit, with several "Best of..." awards, but this record of a conflicted individual working things out in several novel ways deserves a wider audience than just climbing fans.  And besides, the extracts of his comedy act are very funny.

This is showing with short film The Bothy Project, about 4 women exploring the wilds in their own very different ways.
