"An old fashioned love story." Variety

Showing Times

Struggling street photographer Rafi spontaneously takes a picture of stranger Miloni as she wanders past Mumbai's famous love monument, the Taj Mahal.  After going their separate ways, each is engaged by the enigmatic picture.  Miloni reads into it an arid future, chosen for her by her ambitious parents.  Rafi sees in the picture a solution to the problem of his over-bearing grandmother who is threatening a hunger strike unless he gets married.  When Rafi tracks Miloni down to ask her to pretend to be his fiancee, the deception triggers strange new feelings in both.

This latest from writer-director Ritesh Batra (The Lunchbox) is a sweet tale of unlikely romance set against the vibrant backdrop of contemporary Mumbai.  A rather simple premise gains in complexity from the themes of class, traditions and rural vs urban life in modern India.  Empire's ★★★★ review says: "the outcome is never in doubt but the craft is impeccable, the performances low-key and likeable plus there is something persuasive about Batra's gentle worldview, his faith in people and love restorative."  That will do nicely for us!
