Set in the vaguely Gothic glamour of 1950’s post-war London, renowned dressmaker Reynolds Woodcock (Daniel Day-Lewis) and his sister Cyril (Lesley Manville) are the doyens of British fashion, dressing royalty, movie stars, debutantes and Dames.  Although a confirmed martinet in many ways, Woodcock is no confirmed bachelor:  he has a fatal weakness for women.  None lasts, though, until he meets gauchely graceful waitress, Alma (Vicky Krieps), who is a million miles away from the society women of his milieu.  She becomes his Muse and their relationship becomes all consuming, with the need to control vying precipitously with the desire to surrender...

This is about love, creativity, compulsion, pain, pleasure - and how they all feed off each other.  Phantom Thread is writer/director Paul Thomas Anderson’s eighth movie (think There Will Be Blood, Boogie Nights, The Master), and his second collaboration with Daniel Day-Lewis, who has stated this is his final acting role.  There is a tantalising soundtrack from Jonny Greenwood to look forward to, as well.

Anderson inspires great devotion in many and a new film is a red letter event, witness the delirious excitement of our Lexi programmer, Rosie:  "Daniel Day Lewis’ swan song, the finest actor of a generation! He’s the best! His head is like an Easter Island Statue! We will never see his like again! Etc! It’s also the latest film from Paul Thomas Anderson who last worked with DDL on There Will Be Blood. I’m biased and I love this director, but this is going to be amazing…"  'Nuff said!
