Out of Blue

"There is a dash of Nic Roeg here. The noir quality of 'Out of Blue', with its intimations of murky family shame brings out echoes of Roman Polanski’s 'Chinatown', and there is a woozy Lynchian dreaminess." Guardian

Homicide detective Mike Hoolihan's (Patricia Clarkson) investigation into the murder of a leading astrophysicist and black-hole expert destabilises her view of the universe and herself, in this third feature from Carol Morley (Dreams of a Life, Falling). Inspired by Martin Amis' 1997 novel Night TrainOut of Blue initially appears to be a straightforward moody, offbeat police procedural, but as the case becomes deliciously more complex it becomes clear that Morley's film is also something more: an intelligent exploration of existence. Awash in a dreamlike, neo-noir atmosphere, this one-of-a-kind thriller is both a tantalising whodunnit and a rich, metaphysical mind-bender, and Clarkson's understated, tour-de-force performance lures us into the film's intriguing world.  Also look out for excellent support turns from James Caan, Jacki Weaver and our own Toby Jones.
