Once Upon a Time in Hollywood

"Quite simply, I just defy anyone with red blood in their veins not to respond to the crazy bravura of Tarantino’s film-making, not to be bounced around the auditorium at the moment-by-moment enjoyment that this movie delivers." Peter Bradshaw, Guardian

This massively fun shaggy dog story puts two fictional characters - fading Western star Rick (Leo DiCaprio) and his buddy and stunt double Cliff (Brad Pitt) - at the margins of the Manson massacre in 1969.  Rick's modest beach house is next door to the glitzy home of Roman Polanski and Sharon Tate (Margot Robbie), and he's fascinated by the glamorous new Hollywood they represent.  A chance encounter puts Rick and Cliff out at the ranch which was the base of the Manson cult, leading ultimately to a bravura bit of 'Tarantino' in the final scenes.  It's breath-taking, risky and surprising all at once, and Peter Bradshaw says of it: "And then we get the finale, a piece of bloody mayhem which leads to a bizarre denouement which might well have you replaying the entire film in your head. It’s entirely outrageous, disorientating, irresponsible, and also brilliant."  There you have it!

DiCaprio and Pitt - favourite collaborators of Tarantino's - delight in this exploitation black comedy of a thriller.  Tarantino exults in the evocation of the period - the California light, the technicolor palate of '60s LA, and a plethora of  rich pop culture details.  Fans will enjoy the nods to the director's back catalogue; novices won't need to know in order to enjoy this extraordinary film.
