In what we're told will be his last role, Robert Redford takes the lead in this 'mostly' true story of Forrest Tucker, from his audacious escape from San Quentin at the age of 70 to an unprecedented string of heists that confounded authorities and enchanted the public. Wrapped up in the pursuit are detective John Hunt (Casey Affleck), who becomes captivated with Forrest’s commitment to his craft, and a woman (Sissy Spacek), who loves him in spite of his chosen profession. It's a charming, highly enjoyable piece of filmmaking, written and directed by David Lowery (A Ghost Story, Aint Them Bodies Saints).

If this is, in fact, the last we see of Redford on the screen then he's leaving behind a calling card that quite neatly evokes decades of screen charisma, and many hours of pleasure in his company!  Thank you, Bob.

'In what may be the 82-year-old icon’s swan song, the star goes out swinging as a gentleman bank robber in one helluva movie. Sometimes a movie arrives that charms its way into your heart — and The Old Man & the Gun is just such an unassuming, exuberant gift. Only afterwards do you see that its roots go deeper, that its evocation of the past points to an uncertain future.'
Peter Travers, Rolling Stone
