NT: The Tragedy of King Richard

Simon Russell Beale as Richard II, in this encore from the Almeida Theatre

Showing Times

Richard II, King of England, is irresponsible, foolish and vain. His weak leadership sends his kingdom into disarray and his court into uproar. Seeing no other option but to seize power, the ambitious Bolingbroke challenges the throne and the king’s divine right to rule.

Simon Russell Beale plays William Shakespeare’s Richard II, on the stage of the Almeida Theatre. This visceral new production about the limits of power will be directed by Joe Hill-Gibbins, whose previous plays include Little Revolution at the Almeida and Absolute Hell at the National Theatre.

Some of you will have heard Simon Russell Beale in conversation with Nicholas Hytner this summer at the Book Festival.  Their theme was 'Interpreting Shakespeare', and both were clearly zealots.  This promises to be a treat!  And there's a lot more leg room at the Lexi than there is at the Almeida.
