Jonathan Munby directs this contemporary retelling of Shakespeare’s tender, violent, moving and shocking play.  Considered by many to be the greatest tragedy ever written, King Lear sees two ageing fathers – one a monarch, the other his courtier – reject the children who truly love them.  Their blindness unleashes a tornado of pitiless ambition and treachery, as family and state are plunged into a violent power struggle with bitter ends.

This production puts a theatre legend in the title role, and Lear is catapulted into the contemporary, observing familial and political travesties. Ian McKellen's "extraordinaily moving portrayal" received five-star reviews at the Festival. This limited run is virtually sold out now, with the few remaining tickets going for over £100; best seats at the Lexi are available for only £17 - £15 if you're a member.
