It’s 25 years after Mary Poppins descended on the Banks’ household to dispense wisdom and wit leavened with magic and music. The children are now adults and grappling with problems of their own.  Newly widowed Michael (Ben Wishal) is struggling even though Jane (Emily Mortimer) is on hand to help care for and comfort his 3 children.  If ever Mary Poppins’ old charges needed her spoonful of sugar, now’s the time!  And then the wind changes direction:  “Wind’s in the East, mist coming in, / Like somethin’s brewing and ‘bout to begin…”*

Emily Blunt fills Julie Andrews’ high boots with brio, and Lin-Manual Miranda (creator of Hamilton) is lamp lighter Jack.  We expect great things from director Rob Marshall (Into the Woods), and the sparkling cast includes Colin Firth as cruel bank manager Wilkins and Angela Lansbury as the Balloon Lady.  Meryl Streep clearly has terrific fun as Mary's cousin Topsy and, in a nice nod to the original, Dick Van Dyke is bank chairman Mr. Dawes.  In a word: supercalifragilisticexpialidocious!

*These are the conditions in which Mary blows in in the first film.  The lyrics continue:  “Can't put me finger on what lies in store, / But I fear what's to happen all happened before.”  Indeed!

Our screening at 5:00pm on Sun 30 Dec is our Greene Sunday screening.  That's great film made available for the terrific price of only £2.50 through the generous sponsorship of local estate agents Greene & Co.  Tickets will be available through the usual Lexi channels, and also direct from local Kensal Rise and Willesden Green branches of Greene & Co.
