Visionary author Margaret Atwood launches her long-awaited sequel to The Handmaid’s Tale at midnight on 9 September in bookshops, followed by a live broadcast interview from the Lyttleton stage at the National Theatre. The sequel, The Testaments, is set 15 years after the end of its predecessor, in a draconian Gilead which continues to enslave women for breeding purposes. The original has become a modern classic, reentering the Best Sellers List in 2017 ahead of Game of Thrones, aided by the presitigious television adaptation and also by the election of Trump.  Atwood has said everything readers asked her about Gilead and its inner workings have provided inspiration for the new book. “Well, almost everything … The other inspiration is the world we’ve been living in.”

Learn from Atwood about her long life and distinguished career - and why she chose, after 34 years, to return to her seminal work.  She's a compelling public speaker and there will be readings from the new book, documentary content from throughout Atwood’s life, and also questions from the cinema audiences.  Female campainging group Equality Now will be partnering in events around the launch.
