Lady Bird writer/director Greta Gerwig’s take on the beloved story of the March sisters - four young women each determined to live life on her own terms as they come of age in the aftermath of the American Civil War - is both timeless and timely. The book was an American response to Jane Austen, and has been inspiring screen adaptations since 1917! Each version has reflected, to an extent, the values of its time, and this is no different. Gerwig is presenting a story in which women want things for themselves; they have ambitions and good intentions (sometimes bad intentions) and hopes for the future that are not limited to marriage or children.  The star-studded cast includes Saoirse Ronan as ringleader Jo, Emma Watson as Beth, Florence Pugh as Amy and Eliza Scanlen as Meg, with Timothée Chalamet as Laurie, Laura Dern as Marmee - and Meryl Streep having a whale of a good time as busybody Aunt March

'In a year packed with fascinating films about women, here’s the grandmother of them all.'  ★★★★★  Empire

This screening has fully audio-described subtitles.  These will be a boon for those who benefit from them, but may contain too much information for those who don't.
