LFS: Do The Right Thing

Welcome to your neighbourhood film school, a new series of hosted screenings exploring film history and introducing current debates in cinema culture.  Fill in the gaps in your film knowledge and join the conversation.  London has one of the most exciting and diverse cinema scenes in the world, and we welcome the writers, critics, curators and cultural commentators of the capital to NW10.  Everyone welcome!

Spike Lee's scorching satire on race in America feels every bit as fresh, poignant and angry as it did on release in 1989. It's the hottest day of the year in New York City, and in one Brooklyn neighbourhood tensions are starting to boil. Shot in dizzying Technicolor and packed with thundering hip-hop and soul tunes, Lee's film is a masterpiece, plain and simple. The fact that it lost Best Picture to Driving Miss Daisy still feels like one of Hollywood's most shocking crimes against good taste...

Anthony Andrews is co-founder of We Are Parable, who have been putting on the hottest film nights in London for five years now – including last year’s high profile SPIKE IS 60 festival. This was a 6 month celebration of all things Spike Lee which culminated in bringing the man himself to London to meet his fans.

#LexiFilmSchool takes place on Monday evenings.  Tickets are £8 (£6 to Lexi members), with a reduced price of £20 when all 4 titles are booked at the same time. Each LFS film will be introduced by the speaker, and on the Friday before each screening we’ll email you additional information:  short film notes, links to further reading, and a few suggested 'if you like this, then...' titles.

You will also receive your code for a free 30 days' subscription to streaming platform, MUBI, providing access to cult, classic and independent films from around the world.
