The Killing of a Sacred Deer

"This continues director Yorgos Lanthimos' stubbornly idiosyncratic streak - and demonstrates again that his is a talent not to be ignored." Rotten Tomatoes

Dr. Steven Murphy (Colin Farrell) is a renowned cardiovascular surgeon who presides over a spotless household with his wife (Nicole Kidman) and two perfect children. Lurking at the margins of his idyllic suburban existence is Martin (Barry Keoghan), a fatherless teen who insinuates himself into the doctor's life in increasingly unsettling ways. Soon Martin's intent is made clear when he confronts Steven with a long-forgotten transgression that has the power to deprive him of all he holds dear.

Inspired by the Greek myth of Iphigenia in which Agamemnon is required to sacrifice his daughter to appease the Gods, Farrell is the arrogant human, affronting the Gods with his ability to give - and take - Life.  He's also a man of science, who rejects the idea that he must atone or be punished.  In writer/director Lanthimos's version, the Fates are every bit as vain and fickle as the Greek originals, which produces a film by turns terrifying, hysterical, strange, and heartbreaking.  It's an exhilarating journey, from a director who is consistently original and rewarding.  Enjoy!
