"Bold, devastating and utterly beautiful, Todd Phillips and Joaquin Phoenix have not just reimagined one of the most iconic villains in cinema history, but reimagined the comic book movie itself." ★★★★★ Empire

This origin story for Batman's arch nemesis suggests that Arthur Fleck - indelibly portrayed here by Joaquin Phoenix - is a man struggling to find his way in Gotham's fractured society. A clown-for-hire by day, he aspires to be a stand-up comic at night, but finds the joke always seems to be on him. Caught in a ceaseless cycle of apathy and cruelty, Arthur makes one bad decision that brings about a chain reaction of escalating events in this gritty character study.

This sort-of (very sort of!) DC Universe story just radically broke with tradition in winning the Golden Lion for Best Film at recent Venice Film Festival. It is fierce, beautiful and starkly of our time, with it's framing of Fleck as one of society's left behind.  Says the Toronto Sun:  "Writer/director Todd Phillips and Joaquin Phoenix deserve credit for reimagining what a comic book movie can be. One that isn't encumbered with setting up multi-movie plot lines and one that can go to places other films in this genre can't."  Bravo!
