I Am Not a Witch

"It's rare and exhilarating that a new filmmaker arrives on the scene so sure of herself and so willing to take bold, counter-intuitive chances." Variety

A young orphan is conspicuous as an outsider in a village in Zambia, and she is quickly convicted of being a witch.  She is exiled to the state-run 'witches' camp' to spend her days tethered by a long spool of ribbon, a spectacle for paying tourists, and told that if she runs away she will turn into a goat.  Life becomes both better and more complicated when she is called upon to use her 'powers' to adjudicate in local disputes, identifying thieves and liars.  In spite of deep ambiguity about whether she is a witch, she has some inexplicable success...

This is a breath-takingly beautiful and intriguing film from first-time director Rungano Nyoni, herself Zambian born then raised in Wales.  It was described as 'one of the most eye-catching films at the Cannes Directors' Fortnight', and Nyoni's sense of the absurd informs this "present day satire on being a witch" (Nyoni).  The cinematography is striking, the soundtrack unexpectedly rich, and more questions are raised than Nyoni chooses to try to answer.  It's a heady, satisfying combination.
