Early Man

"A gloriously funny tale of stone-age stragglers." ★★★★ Telegraph

Showing Times

This is the story of a tribe of Stone Age cavemen, led by ever-intrepid Dug (Eddie Redmayne).  The tribe is forced out of their bucolic homelands by more advanced humans, and are subjugated by the wicked Bronze Age Lord Nooth (Tom Hiddleston) who keeps his people tractable through the thrill of the Sacred Game - yep, football!  When the cave men have a chance to win back their home on the football pitch, all seems hopeless until they find a female football wizard, Goona (Maisie Williams) who has the power to raise their game...

Aardman is respsible for their distinctive animation, claymation - as seen in Creature Comforts, Wallace & Grommit et al - which has provided many hours of chortling pleasure for young and old(er).  Is this traditional, labour intensive mode of animation still worth all the effort and cost, shot frame by frame, with a horde of animators making modifications for every frame?  A resounding 'yes'!  In this case, Brexit and the World Cup provide pretty unlikely reference points, but it works, and the sight gags and good natured humour keep things jogging along at a clip.
