The Personal History of David Copperfield: "There is something wonderfully unexpected – and perhaps even subversive – in responding to our fraught times with a tale in which wit and goodness win through in the end." ★★★★ Telegraph

"Whether I shall turn out to be the hero of my own life, or whether that station will be held by anybody else, these pages must show."  So begins the story of David Copperfield, a beloved saga populated by some of the most picaresque characters in English Literature.  David's nursmaid Peggety (Daisy May Cooper) gives him a love of language, while his mother's second marriage to the hateful Mr Murdstone (Darren Boyd) sees David sent away to begin a journey that includes doughty aunt Betsey Trotwood (marvellous Tilda Swinton) and kindly-but-confused Mr Dick (Hugh Laurie).  Peter Capaldi's Mr Micawber is a hugely likable scallawag, while Ben Wishaw's Uriah Heap is hideously memorable!

Charles Dickens' favourite 'child', the book which is most closely autobiographical, finds new life and meaning in this adaptation from Armando Iannucci (The Death of Stalin, Veep, The Thick of It).  When asked "why this, why now," Iannucci said he felt the need to do something that made people happy, and he thought David's journey - figuring out who he was and how he fit in - was a universal theme.  Much has been made of the colour-blind casting, starting with Dev Patel in the title role.  Iannucci says he only ever had Dev in mind for David, and that he wanted to be able to choose from the very best actors available for the ensemble cast. It's certainly a brilliant assembly, and they all seem to be having a rollickin' good time.  We're sure you will, too!
