Vivacious young Sidonie-Gabrielle Colette (Keira Knightley) is whisked away from her beloved Burgundy countryside and inducted in to sophisticated Parisian society by her new husband, the popular boulvardier and author, Willy (Dominic West).  Eventually Willy's mounting debt threatens their home and Colette agrees to have a go at ghost writing for him.  Her first manuscript is full of charming girlish capers and Nature, causing Willy to critique:  "We need more spice, less literature!."  Between them, enduring heroine Claudine is created, an engaging independent young woman of appetites and agency, much like Colette herself. Claudine is an instant hit with the women of France, ultimately providing Colette with the means to live her life in brazen defiance of society's morés.

This is the true story of a spirited, talented author who lived an independent life long before any hashtags.  A great story then, it seems remarkably pertinent now in this intelligent, vivacious treatment. It is a pleasure to see Knightley radiant in the part!  She brings her own forthright feminism to the role, and the chemistry between her and West - aligned with an intelligent script - make their anomalous relationship credible. Enjoy!
