"This is an angry film as well as a hugely entertaining one, and Lee has complete control over its shifting tone, minute by minute." Time Magazine

In the early 1970s rookie detective Ron Stallworth (John David Washington) joined the Colorado Springs Police as the first black person in the department.  Determined to make a name for himself, Ron conceives of an outrageous idea:  to infiltrate and expose the Ku Klux Klan. When his phone approach to the Klan is successful he realises he needs to do a "Cyrando de Bergerac" and he recruits a more seasoned colleague, Flip Zimmerman (Adam Driver), to do the in-person side of the investigation.  This unlikely partnership, aligned with a plain incredible plan, produces unexpected results!

This is a story for today, in an age where satirists are challenged to eclipse the absurdity of real events.  Director Spike Lee (Do the Right Thing, She's Gotta Have It) exults in the natural comedy of the double act but is all the while under-pinning the laughs and Blaxploitation motifs with chilling contemporary references.  Being quintessential Lee, the boisterous story telling eventually makes way for hard-hitting political commentary, and beneath the racial tinderbox of the '70s we hear the drums of the white supremacist rally in Charlottesville last year and the equivocal response of President Trump to the death of a protestor.  This is the work of a master, and it is uniquely of this time but is also a reminder that things haven't changed all that much.

Sun 9 Sep at 5:00 is our Greene Sunday screening.  That's great film at the great price of £2.50, courtesy of local estate agents Greene & Co.  Tickets are available through normal Lexi channels, and also direct from Greene & Co branch offices in Kensal Rise and Willesden Green.  Once we're sold out at the Lexi there are likely to still be some tickets still available at the branches.  Pop in and say 'hey'!
