Baby Driver

"Sweet, funny and utterly original — you won’t see a film like it this year." ★★★★★ Empire

Baby (Ansel Elgort) has been a getaway driver for kingpin Doc (Kevin Spacey) since he was too young to drive, paying off an outstanding debt to the crime boss.  His life is lived to a wild soundtrack, the commanding beat of his favourite tunes which drown out his tinnitus and the memories associated with it.  When Baby meets waitress Deborah (Lily James) he sees a way out of this life, but Doc requests one final job from him: "I said we were done; I didn't say we were through."

Think The Driver, Bullit, Point Break; movies that are so damn stylish they transcend their own reality.  This is a movie - a soundtrack - that writer/director Edgar Wright (Shaun of the Dead, Hot Fuzz) has been mulling over for 22 years.  Over that period Wright's understanding of his soundtrack grew, and the idea for the story grew out of it.   Even the early storyboarding of the scenes was choreographed to fit  the music-in-mind, as if Wright was his own Baby Driver.  It's bold, dynamic film making. and the result is totally original, totally compelling.  Throw in key character turns from Jon Hamm and Jamie Foxx and you've got the party of the summer!
