Alone in Berlin

"Thompson and Gleeson are a class act, in a relationship so stale and stiff they cannot even hug during their grief, and the chance to take positive action, however dangerous, begins to bring them back to life." Times

This true-life tale is based on the wonderful book by Hans Fallada.  Its tale of quiet courage unfolds against the bleak backdrop of Berlin in 1940. Otto (Brendan Gleeson) and Anna Quangel (Emma Thompson) are a working class couple, passingly loyal to the regime and content to be part of the war effort. When their son is killed on the frontlines, however, everything changes. In a small but significant act of rebellion they leave postcards with anti-Nazi facts and figures placed around Berlin, for others to find. But this seemingly small act of subversion rattles the regime, including a dedicated police inspector (Daniel Bruhl) who will not rest until the culprits have been caught.

This dignified and powerful piece has been rather slighted by some of the critics. We beg to differ!  The Lexi team previewed it and commend it to you most genuinely.
