Almost Heaven + Q&A

"A vibrant, human story” Hollywood Reporter

Showing Times

Far from home and terrified of ghosts, 17 year old Ying Ling is training to become a mortician in one of China’s largest funeral homes, a job involving beautician skills more than mortician training. She learns to enact the respectful rituals of departure, but the job is hard and lonely. When a friendship blossoms with her colleague, Jin Hau, over the mannequin that they use to practise on, it seems that Ling might be on threshold of more normal 17 year old interests, like first love, but documentaries can't always deliver such straight-forward, wished-for endings!

This tender, life affirming coming-of-age story has been delighting people on the documentary circuit, and was nominated by Little White Lies as one of the '10 Best' at this year's Sheffield DocFest. Join us for a live Q&A with director Carol Salter afterwards.
