The Met Opera 2011/12 Season, on sale now

met opera

The Metropolitan Opera’s stunning, award-winning series The Met: Live in HD continues for its sixth season, featuring 11 live transmissions.  The season opens with Anna Netrebko as Donizetti’s tragic Anna Bolena on October 15, culminating in April 2012 with Natalie Dessay wearing the “La Traviata” red dress for the first time at the Met.  Devotees will be rewarded with the completion of the new Ring cycle with  more of Robert Lepage’s revolutionary stage machinery in Siegfried and Gotterdammerung, both conducted by James Levine.  The ENO’s innovative staging of Phillip Glass’s tribute to Ghandi, the mesmerising Satyagraha, returns to the Met, and this magical season also includes the premiere of a Baroque fantasy, Enchanted Island, with music from Handel, Vivaldi and others.

We have had our incredible audio system serviced in anticipation, and look forward to welcoming aficionados and initiates alike!  We will continue with the assigned seat system which worked well last Season, and hope to have a wider variety of food available to sustain you through such epics as Gotterdammerung!

We’ve got Easter cracked!

Animated animals with short names, voiced by the stars.  Half-term holiday paydirt, non? Soooo, first up, from the makers of Ice Age, is RIO, a mischievous macaw, voiced by Jesse ‘Social Network‘ Eisenberg (Facebeak?).  Then there’s RANGO, the mischievous chameleon, who sounds a lot like Johnny Depp and smacks heavily of Hunter S. Thompson. And finally, say howdy to HOP and its hero E.B., a – get this! - mischievous bunny, brought to life by the vocal talents of Russell Brand (seriously). Hollywood formulaic? How dare you. Great fun?  YesYes!

April Programme

The printed version of our programme has arrived, and will be available from the Lexi  throughout the month – even when we aren’t open.  It is also available on line.  Click on “Download programme” above to preview our fantastic April line-up.  We think it is choc full of holiday treats for all ages!

Fezeka’s Voice – plus live Q & A with director Holly Lubbock

Tuesday 8th Feb, 20:00 + Director/Producer Q&A

Fezeka's VoiceAfter sell-out screenings elsewhere, The Lexi is delighted to be showing award-winning documentary, Fezeka’s Voice. The film tells the inspirational story of one man and his life’s mission to use the transformative power of music to instill confidence, pride and hope into the children of his South African township. Featuring a stunning soundtrack, Fezeka’s Voice follows the challenges and triumphs of the Fezeka High School choir as they embark on the greatest journey of their lives – coming to England to perform.

The film has touched the hearts of those who have seen it. The Observer said it was, “warm hearted and heart-warming,” while The Times says, “it puts the X Factor to shame in terms of musical heroism. And Archbishop Desmond Tutu gave it the following endorsement: “Fezeka’s Voice needs to be shared with as wide an audience as possible. The power of mentorship, as demonstrated in this film, is extraordinary.”

A Q&A with director/ producer team, Holly Lubbock and Katherine Crawley, will follow the film.

All hail new Mayor Ranya!

We were just about to commission the gold chains and ermine robes for Niall, such has been his monopoly of the Lexi Mayorship on Foursquare, but then….then comes Ranya, to oust Mayor Niall, and take top spot.

But just who is Ranya?

Do you know?

Ride, Rise, Roar plus Q&A

20 Jan, 20:45

Live satellite “In Conversation” with David Byrne afterwards.

ride rise roarFollowing on from Jonathan Demme’s ground-breaking Talking Heads doc Stop Making Sense (1984), Ride, Rise, Roar is a David Byrne concert film that blends riveting onstage performances with intimate details of the creative collaborations that make the music, dance and performance happen.

Shot with multiple cameras over several concerts during the 08/09 tour, the film blends the energy and of classic Talking Heads with the heartfelt pathos of David Byrne and Brian Eno’s most recent collaboration (“Everything That Happens Will Happen Today”).

Between songs (each one shown in its entirety), the film gains an unprecedented intimacy with Byrne and the band, documenting behind-the-scenes auditions, rehearsals, and interviews with key players while revealing the creative process produced the show’s unique fusion of pop music and modern dance.

Ride, Rise, Roar celebrates Byrne’s extensive career and testifies to the creativity that keeps him going today.

Soch Lo + live Q&A

Sun 30 Jan, 1245

Left for dead in the desert, without future or past, survival is a desperate business for Baba (Pannu). When his borderline existence is discovered, Baba is offered shelter in return for his protection and he must challenge the tyrant who has made his protectors’ lives a misery. In return, Pali (Madan) agrees to accompany Baba on the quest to unravel his past. As violent flashbacks hint at tragedy, Baba must choose to return to his past or embrace a different future.

After theatrical releases in India and the US, and a special screening at the Cannes Festival 2009, Indian independent feature Soch Lo is being released on DVD. Join key cast members – writer/director/actor Sartaj Singh Pannu and Bollywood star Barkha Madan (both pictured right) – at the Lexi for a gala DVD launch screening, followed by a Q&A. To celebrate, tickets will be available at the special price of £3. The film will be shown in Hindi, with English subtitles.

Soch Lo is the inspiration of Pannu and his team of committed partners. What started as a short film took wing, and funding was raised via screenings of the work-in-progress on You Tube. The result reflects Pannu’s mainstream Bollywood experience, but is crossed with a fresh independent vision. Watch out Bollywood – this Indian Memento could be the model for the future!
