Part of LOCO LONDON – four days of the world’s funniest films - The Ephrathon is a celebration of the life and work of Nora Ephron, who died in 2012. Ephron was well known as a writer and screenwriter/director and we will be screenings three of her finest films, Heartburn, Sleepless in Seattle and Julie and Julia, each to be introduced by a guest host.
11:00 Heartburn (15) An autobiographical look at the breakup of Ephron’s marriage to Carl “All the President’s Men” Bernstein. Starring Meryl Streep and Jack Nicholson, the strap line was: ”They thought it was love, It was really heartburn.”
13:00 Sleepless in Seattle (PG) The film that revived the romcom! With Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan.
15:00 Julie & Julia (12a) Julia Child’s story of her start in the cooking profession is intertwined with blogger Julie Powell’s 2002 challenge to cook all the recipes in Child’s first book. Ephron’s last film.
And as anyone who knows Ephron’s work will know, Ephron cooked when she was up, she cooked when she was down, and she cooked in celebration of life, love and family. So we invite you to cook, too, and what better than fruit pie? Use your best family recipe – or crib from Nigella – and bring it along on the day for sharing and judging by Sophie Grey, the Crazy Baker herself! The winner will receive a signed copy of Grey’s book Let’s Make Whoppies, plus a year’s Lexi membership.
Tickets are £15 for all three films, including introductions, shared pies – and a whole lot of laughs!
LOCO is delighted to be back at BFI Southbank for a second year, as well as new venues including Hackney Picturehouse and The Lexi Cinema. Offering world and UK premieres and with a special focus on Women in Comedy and Far Eastern comedy, LOCO LONDON will lighten up the capital in the most miserable week of the year. Full programme here.
