“A masterpiece…bends the documentary genre, bringing it to poetic heights.” Le Monde

Patricio Guzmán (The Battle for Chile, The Pinochet Case), one of the legends of documentary, here presents his visionary world view.  It is a remarkable meditation on memory, history and eternity.  The film is set in the arid expanses of Chile’s Atacama Desert which hosts both the world’s foremost cosmological research, and also scores of diligent searchers driven to find and identify the remains of Chile’s ‘disappeared’.  While women comb through the sands for remains of loved ones snatched during Pinochet’s regime, astronomers peer into the cosmos to solve the riddle of the beginning of life.  That these two stories should come together is already remarkable; that they come together to such profound and poetic effect is tribute to Guzman’s great achievement.
