Woody Harrelson puts in a career-defining turn as crooked cop Dave Brown in his second fruitful collaboration with writer/director Oren Moverman (The Messenger). Set in ‘90s LA, with the fallout of the infamous Rodney King police brutality case still fresh, Rampart follows Brown, an aging throwback to a time when law enforcement was more accommodating of shoot-first-ask-questions-later policecraft. But when the heat is on him after his heavy-handed tactics are caught on tape, his professional and private walls come crashing down around him.
Part ‘policier’ and part nuanced psychological study of a man on the ropes – and with a crisply satisfying script co-authored by James Ellroy (LA Confidential) – this is a richly textured, intelligent addition to the cadre of good cop/bad cop films. Rosie, our Lexi General Manager, likes!
